This series is composed of self-portraits layered with multiple elements, in an attempt to visually express the instability I was experiencing as being an immigrant for the first time in my life—the internal conflict of being uprooted and trying to establish myself in a place that felt completely alien.
Migration made me see how much of my identity had been tied to the place I was born, and how different I became in this new environment. For a while, I felt as though I had lost my sense of self, as I struggled to navigate the new social norms, references, and behaviors expected in this unfamiliar context. I found myself constantly adapting, trying to fit into a society that seemed so distant from the one I had known.
Exhibit as part of the Festival Offenes Neuköln 2019, at Gallery Satellite Berlin – Berlin, Germany. 24, 25 & 26th of May, 2019.
